A three-run eighth inning explosion turned a manageable deficit into an insurmountable gap as Southwestern Oregon pulled away from the UCC Riverhawks 10-5 in conference baseball action at home Sunday.
The Riverhawks (15-5 overall) battled back from early deficits with two-run rallies in both the fifth and sixth innings to pull within 5-5, but couldn't contain the Lakers' offensive attack down the stretch. Southwestern Oregon scored six unanswered runs over the final three innings to seal the victory.
Jaxon Marble provided the lone bright spot offensively for UCC, going a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate. Shiloh Wilson drove in two runs despite managing just one hit in five at-bats, while Caden Kuhnert also knocked in a pair without recording a hit.
The Riverhawks struggled to find consistent pitching, as starter Jayden Lucas lasted just 3.1 innings before giving way to Tristan Ledbetter, who took the loss despite striking out six batters over 4.2 innings of work.
Southwestern Oregon's Kaleb Long led the offensive charge, going 4-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Hiroto Horikawa added three RBIs on two hits for the Lakers.
The loss snaps what had been a strong start to the season for the Riverhawks, who'll look to bounce back in their next conference matchup as they continue battling for positioning in league standings.
